Tony Pucci at a Recent Book Reading
Election Day! Wherever you live, whatever your party affiliation, please exercise your right to vote. You can make a difference!
Tony Pucci getting ready for another guest appearance on "Frankly Speaking"
I am writing to you today because the upcoming election will shape the future of Chemung County for years to come. It is too important to vote simply along party lines. We need to make sure that we have the candidate most prepared to do the serious work yet to come.
My opponent has served as the First District Legislator for the past 16 years. Many people of all political parties that I have spoken with have been disappointed by his vote to take much-needed sales tax revenues from the towns as well as his vote to increase his own salary and that of his colleagues.
We need a legislator who understands that he works for the people, not the County. We need someone who does more than just sit on committees and vote as he is told to vote. We need a legislator who will seek input from the voters and will keep them informed of important issues through social media, newsletters, and town hall meetings.
Recently, the Chemung County League of Women Voters held a “meet the candidate” forum. It was a chance for the voters to hear of our visions for the future and to ask questions. Unfortunately, my opponent failed to attend this event. Furthermore, the online newspaper, elmiratelegram.com, asked all of the candidates throughout the County to respond to a number of questions. You will find my complete responses there. However, my opponent left responses to 5 of the 8 questions blank and answered the rest with one sentence. This is more than disappointing.
It is also worth noting that although the Conservative Party had endorsed my opponent in the past, this year they voted unanimously to give me their endorsement. This indicates their belief that I am the right person to represent the First District as we work to make Chemung County a place of which we can all be proud.
Please take a moment to look at my website, pucciforlegislature.com, and at the online profiles of both candidates at elmiratelegram.com. The differences are clear. I will vote to reduce salaries of the legislators. I will fight to restore lost sales tax revenues, and I will keep you informed. It is no longer sufficient simply to sit at the table. Your legislator must be actively engaged, asking tough questions, thinking independently, and working collaboratively to achieve the best outcomes.
I respectfully ask for your vote on Nov. 6th. I will put the FIRST DISTRICT FIRST!
Fact: Since my "Your Turn" piece, "Chemung County legislators make too much," appeared in the Star-Gazette on Feb. 4th, all three candidates for Chemung County Executive have indicated that they would accept a lower salary.
Fact: Chemung County legislators, among the highest paid in Upstate NY, voted to give themselves a raise at a time when many in our area are struggling financially. My opponent voted to give himself this raise. This is unethical and unreasonable. I will fight for lower salaries. I will also donate a portion of my salary to Youth Programs that benefit children in the First District.
Fact: Many legislators have been in office for decades while Chemung County has declined. My opponent has been in office for 16 years, and despite stating publicly that he believes in tern limits, is running for his 5th term. I strongly believe in a limit of 2 terms for all members of the Legislature.
Fact: Legislators who work an average of 10 hours a week (information obtained through a Freedom of Information request) should not receive medical and retirement benefits. I will not accept these perks, and I will fight to remove these unwarranted benefits.
Fact: The County Sales Tax Redistribution Plan of 2013 has hurt many of the municipalities in Chemung County. My opponent voted for this plan. He voted against the best interests of the people who elected him to office. I will fight for a return of lost sales tax revenue and for a "fair share" of "shared services."
Fact: As I campaign door-to-door, I find that many residents do not even know the name of their current legislator who has been in office for 16 years. We need a legislator who will seek input from the residents on issues that affect their lives. We need a legislator who will keep us informed. I pledge to hold Town Hall meetings as needed in the Town of Catlin, the Town of Veteran, and the Village of Millport.
Fact: Many legislators simply vote as they are told. I will be an independent thinker. I will ask tough questions. I will do the necessary research. I will work hard for you.
Fact: I will work for the all of the people of the First District regardless of party affiliation. I will put your interests first.
I am running for this office because we can no longer afford to do business as usual. The days of a “do-nothing” Legislature must end.
I am a fiscal conservative who understands that residents feel "overtaxed." When we spend money, we must "spend smart." That means that every dollar spent must be justified.
I stand for openness, honesty, and transparency in government. I believe in the need for discussion, dialogue, and collaboration with all concerned in order to get the job done. I feel that serving on the County Legislature is an honor, not a job that should be taken for granted.
I will do what is in the best interest of the residents of the First District and of the County.
